Compositions

Much of the music I write is for the church, but I have written for many contexts. And I’m happy to share some music here. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you are interested in purchasing any of these scores, or if you’re looking for a piece of mine that’s not listed here.

Anthems

Alleluia Benedictus qui venit

A short setting of Psalm 118:26-27 with Alleluias for SATB, optional congregation, and organ. This piece was written for this use on the occasion of the baptism of my daughter, Margaret, in 2019 and is dedicated to her. Margaret was baptized on the First Sunday after the Epiphany: the Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This piece, a setting of a proper Alleluia for was sung before the Gospel on that Sunday.

Far, far away is Bethlehem

An anthem for SATB and organ from words by Walter Russell Bowie (1882–1969). Though I wrote it for use at Christmas (and I admit I was trying to channel my “inner Rutter” on this one) the text is suitable for general use. It is a prayer to Christ to “dwell with us today.”

Peace I leave with you

A short anthem (also suitable as an introit). I find myself particularly drawn to the words inscribed on church buildings. This is the first “inscription anthems” I wrote based on words inscribed in a house of worship. These words are inscribed over the high altar of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Richmond, Va.

Take away the noise of your songs

In the minutes after Trayvon Martin’s killer was acquitted in 2013 a verse from the prophet Amos came across my Twitter feed. I immediately went to the piano and started on this piece. This anthem is a setting of Amos 5:23-24 for SATB.

Other

Adam lay ybounden

Part choral music and part performance art, this piece is very difficult and just as expensive. Not recommended you attempt this unless your choir is incredibly good or you are looking to irritate them. This piece is meant to prove two things: 1) not all choral music needs to be beautiful, and 2) the world probably doesn’t need any more settings of this text. Also, this score contains errors, and I’m not quite sure what they are. You should sing the Ord or the Boles instead.

Service Music

The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord - Wedding Gradual

A setting of Psalm 33:12,18,20-21,22 for cantor, congregation, and organ, written for the wedding of a good friend in 2021.

Perusal score (PDF)
$20 license for use, including graphic/engraving file for congregation.

The Passion According to Luke

This choral setting of the Passion (Luke 23:1–49) was written for liturgical use on Palm Sunday in Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) Year C. It is scored for 6 Soloists, SATB, Congregation, and Organ, and was first sung at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Richmond, Va. on Palm Sunday, 2013.

The Passion begins with all singing the first stanza of Hymn 158 in the Episcopal Hymnal 1982: “Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended” (Herzliebster Jesu). The newly composed material is derived from this hymn. Stanzas of the hymn continue to be sung throughout the Passion narrative. The organ provides contrasting drones for the various sections and cues the singing of the hymn stanzas.

The setting is designed to conclude with the Narrator singing the traditional “planctus” tone (not included in the score; see Chant Resources from Grace, Newark for an edition by Bruce Ford). Therefore the setting may conclude at verse 49 (as indicated in the RCL), or it may be easily extended to verse 56 as desired.

The Third Song of Isaiah (BCP Canticle 11) in a setting for congregation and organ with three optional handbells. Trisagion Sancti Pauli

A setting of the Trisagion for Congregation, SATB, and Organ, written for use at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Richmond, Va. Moving up a half-step is too predictable, I thought. What if it went down—and then way up?
