Vincent DuBois Masterclass

The following are my notes (taken on my personal digital assistant) from 9 April 2003, Finney Chapel, Oberlin, Ohio.

N.B. "JDC" refers to Prof. James David Christie who was translating and oggling Vincent DuBois (VD)

Notes

Vincent Dubois Masterclass (9.4.03)

Vierne 4:1
I really don't care for this piece at all
connect, slurs
beginning thru middle: one section
(French accent hard to understand from behind)
don't separate

Vincent Dubois is really ineffective in masterclass setting
unaware of spectators
has no larger purpose other than a cursory examination of this student's phrasing

"Just think about it"
VD 14:29

think groups of 2 or 4 bars

hey, why doesn't she just play the second part just like before?

"More intense"
14:33

FORMAT OF MASTERCLASS
1 student plays
2 he says "more intense"
3 he takes the bench

"it's difficult to explain"
14:35

"anything you can connect you should connect, even if he makes a phrase mark"
Cochereau - Latry - Dubois - JDC 14:48

he does have a nice *ss

I had no idea it was possible to make this piece sound so boring (Titus)

when is the recital, now?

"if you do it as you did it, the effect is going to be not so, uh, good" 15:03
